Ingredient Highlight: Astragalus

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is not a herb commonly discussed within the context of Ayurveda, as it primarily originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has a long history of use in Chinese herbalism. However, Ayurveda recognizes the value of various herbs and their potential benefits, and while astragalus may not be traditionally classified within the Ayurvedic system, its properties and effects can be understood within Ayurvedic principles to some extent.

  • Energetic Properties: Although not specifically categorized in Ayurveda, astragalus is seen as having properties that align with certain Ayurvedic principles. For instance, it might be considered to have a warming nature due to its traditional use in supporting immune function and vitality.

  • Immune Support: In both TCM and modern herbalism, astragalus is primarily valued for its immune-supportive properties.

  • Adaptogenic: Astragalus is often classified as an adaptogen in modern herbalism, meaning it may help the body adapt to stressors and support overall resilience. Ayurveda also recognizes the importance of adaptogens in promoting vitality and balance.

  • Digestive Health: Ayurveda places great emphasis on digestion and considers it a cornerstone of health. While astragalus is not traditionally associated with digestive health in Ayurveda, some herbalists in other traditions suggest that it may indirectly support digestion by promoting overall vitality and well-being.

  • Cardiovascular Support: In TCM, astragalus is sometimes used to support cardiovascular health.

  • Preparation and Usage: Astragalus is commonly consumed as a tea, tincture, or in powdered form. In Ayurveda, it might be combined with other herbs or formulations to create blends that support immune function and vitality, although traditional Ayurvedic texts do not typically mention astragalus specifically.

While astragalus is not traditionally discussed within the framework of Ayurveda, its potential benefits align with certain Ayurvedic principles related to immune support, vitality, and resilience, which is why we use it in our Totally Turmeric daily wellness shot.
