Cortisol: The hormone we love to hate
Amanda Hester-SmithShare
CORTISOL CORTISOL CORTISOL...
It feels like I can’t open my phone or check my email without seeing that word these days. Cortisol is trending, and not in a cute way. Why is everyone suddenly talking about it? Because our bodies are talking. And, honestly, they’re screaming.
The good news? There’s a lot we can do. As individuals and as a community, we can shift. We can elevate our rituals and respond to our stress differently. But first, let’s get clear on what cortisol actually is.
WHAT IS CORTISOL?
First, let’s be fair to cortisol. It’s not the villain, we need it. It’s our body’s natural stress hormone, designed to help us survive. Cortisol wakes us up in the morning, keeps our blood sugar balanced, and helps us react to danger. But like any good thing, too much of it becomes a problem.
The issue isn’t cortisol itself. It’s the constant release of cortisol…day after day, stress after stress, never letting up. Your kids are yelling, your boss is pressuring you, your phone won’t stop buzzing, and somehow, you’re also supposed to drink more water and remember to breathe. These are what I call “stacker stressors.”
They build. They don’t reset. And they keep cortisol pumping like a broken faucet. That’s when things go sideways.
So no, you can’t avoid stress. But you can change how your body responds to it. You can shift your habits, your rituals, your mindset. You can bring in herbs, adaptogens, nourishment and boundaries. You can find the balance that helps your body help you.
Take a deep breath. You’ve got this.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CORTISOL STAYS HIGH?
When cortisol hangs out at elevated levels for too long, it causes all sorts of wear and tear on your body:
- High blood pressure
- Insulin resistance
- Hormonal imbalances
- Chronic fatigue
- Poor sleep
- Premature aging
Basically: burnout isn’t just a vibe. It’s a hormonal reality. And the longer we let it spiral, the harder it becomes to bounce back.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE HIGH CORTISOL?
- Some of the most common signs:
- Trouble sleeping (especially waking up around 3am)
- Stubborn belly fat
- Anxiety or mood swings
- PMS that feels like a full personality shift
- Fatigue that no latte can fix
- Low libido
- Skin issues
- "Moon face" (swelling or puffiness around the cheeks and eyes)
HOW TO LOWER CORTISOL NATURALLY
Here’s the good news: your body wants to heal. It just needs support. That means:
- A nourishing, anti-inflammatory diet
- Gentle daily movement
- Sleep hygiene
- Nature time
- Breathwork + meditation
- Nervous system regulation
- And yes… adaptogens
LET’S TALK ABOUT ADAPTOGENS
Adaptogens are our plant allies. Roots, herbs, berries, and mushrooms that help the body resist and recover from stress. They’re science-backed, ancient, and so deeply necessary in modern life. They modulate cortisol, nourish the adrenals, and bring the body back to balance.
Some of my favorite adaptogens for cortisol support:
Ashwagandha
Known as “the smell of a horse” (don’t worry, it doesn’t taste like one), ashwagandha is a grounding, powerful herb that improves sleep, balances hormones, and reduces cortisol by up to 30%. You’ll find it in our Kapow Cacao blend and for good reason.
Amalaki
Also called Indian gooseberry, this antioxidant-rich fruit is loaded with vitamin C, supports digestion, and helps the body detox oxidative stress. I take it daily and honestly wouldn’t go without it.
Reishi
The queen of the mushrooms. Reishi is calming, immune-boosting, and deeply restorative. It strengthens adrenal function and gently regulates cortisol.
Brahmi
Ayurveda’s brain tonic. Brahmi supports clarity, memory, and mood. It’s your fog-clearing friend when cortisol makes your brain feel scrambled.
Gotu Kola
A leafy powerhouse that improves cognitive function, cools inflammation, and modulates cortisol. Used for centuries to support mental clarity and emotional resilience.
THE WOMEN + CORTISOL CONNECTION
Women carry so much. Especially during key transitions like fertility and menopause. Cortisol has a huge impact on both.
Fertility:
When cortisol is high, your body goes into survival mode. Ovulation becomes irregular or disappears altogether, and conception becomes difficult. Your body prioritizes survival over reproduction. Balancing cortisol is a foundational step in boosting fertility.
Menopause:
During menopause, estrogen and progesterone decline—and your adrenals are supposed to step in and help. But if they’re already tapped from stress, things get messy: hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, fatigue. High cortisol just makes the ride bumpier.
Cortisol also competes with serotonin and GABA—the neurotransmitters that keep us calm, happy, and emotionally balanced. That’s why anxiety and brain fog often peak midlife.
THE BALANCED PATH FORWARD
If you suspect your cortisol is high, it’s time to elevate your ritual. You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight, but you can start with a daily adaptogenic brew like our Kapow Cacao.
